CANTEY BAY PLANTATION ANNOUNCED AS OFFICIAL NAME FOR LAKE MARION PROPERTY

Charleston, SC (January 2008) – The Beach Company is pleased to announce Cantey Bay Plantation as the official name for the future community on Lake Marion just outside of Summerton, South Carolina. The 4,000 acre property includes over two miles of frontage on both sides of I-95 and two miles along Lake Marion, making it the largest undeveloped lakefront parcel in the region.

The name Cantey Bay Plantation has local historical significance and embodies a true sense of authenticity. A number of notable plantations once existed in the vicinity of Lake Marion, but many of these historical landmarks are now submerged under the waters of Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie. In 1939, work began on the Santee Cooper Hydroelectric and Navigation Project, and the ensuing floods that created the two lakes displaced many families and communities in the area. A number of historic homes, churches and cemeteries were lost, and more than two hundred square miles of private property were sacrificed in order to create a lake bed for the public welfare of the area.

The Beach Company felt it would be appropriate to honor these once thriving plantations that have been forever lost under the lakes by remembering them in the name of the new community. Along with this tribute to the legacy of the plantations, the natural history of the area was also taken into consideration. Significant bodies of water, indigenous species of plants, animals and fish and different regions of the lake itself were all explored as possibilities, and Cantey Bay was found to be a substantial portion of Lake Marion. “A great deal of thought went into this naming process,” said John Darby, President and CEO of The Beach Company. “After much research, as well as many focus groups and brainstorming sessions, a name was chosen that reflected the true heritage of the area and spoke to its inherent natural surroundings: Cantey Bay Plantation.”

The name was publicly announced for the first time on Monday, January 28th in a meeting between executives from The Beach Company and officials representing Clarendon County, the Town of Summerton and the Town of Manning. “We are thrilled that the name Cantey Bay Plantation has been well-received by the representatives of` Summerton, Manning and Clarendon County,” said Kevin O’Neill, Vice President of Development for The Beach Company. “There has been a great deal of excitement and anticipation related to this development, and it will facilitate a boost in the local economy, providing new job opportunities, new homes and new area amenities and attractions.”

The Beach Company, founded in Charleston in 1945, has honored a tradition of responsibility and excellence in providing top quality real estate products and services for communities, businesses, industry and most importantly families across the Charleston Lowcountry and Southeast Region.
